How shafts fail
Most shaft problems start small: a bearing seat that has worn undersize, a keyway that has opened up, a damaged thread, or light scoring from a failed seal. Left alone, these faults spread to bearings, couplings and gearboxes, and a planned repair becomes a breakdown.
Inspection comes first
Before quoting, the shaft is cleaned and measured against the drawing or a matching good part. We check diameters, run-out between centres, keyway width and thread condition, and look for cracks around shoulders and keyways where stress concentrates.

Repair options
Where the material and loading allow, worn sections can be built up by controlled welding and then machined back to size on a lathe. Damaged keyways can be re-cut or relocated, and threads re-cut or rebuilt. Where a shaft is cracked, heavily bent or made from a material that does not weld reliably, manufacturing a new shaft is usually the safer choice.
Repair or replace?
A rebuild often makes sense for large, long-lead or obsolete shafts where downtime is costly. A new shaft is better when the design needs to change, the failure keeps repeating, or the repair would compromise strength. We explain the recommendation and its limits before work starts.
